Description
Victorian 18K Gold Snake & Flower Brooch with Emeralds, Sapphire, and Rose Cut Diamonds – ca. Mid-19th Century

An exceptional and symbolic jewel from the mid-Victorian period, this antique brooch depicts a coiled serpent encircling a delicately rendered flower. Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold and weighing 9.8 grams, the piece features intricate hand-chasing along the serpent’s scales and an expressive, lifelike head reaching for the flower.

  • Metal: 18k yellow gold (unmarked, acid tested)
  • Dimensions: 29mm x 30.6mm overall; circle measures 25.8mm diameter
  • Gemstones:
    • Approx. 1.04 carats total of vivid green cabochon emeralds
    • One approx. 0.10ct blue sapphire, likely of Ceylon origin, prong-set at the flower’s center
    • Nine antique rose cut diamonds set in petal-form around the flower and in the serpent’s eyes
A powerful motif in 19th-century jewelry, the snake symbolized eternal love, wisdom, and protection. The detailed craftsmanship and gemstone selection reflect high standards of the era. The use of naturalistic floral and animal forms was popular in sentimental jewelry during the Romantic period of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Condition: Very good antique condition. Light wear consistent with age. The pin mechanism is functional and secure.
A striking example of Victorian symbolism and workmanship, ideal for collectors of 19th-century sentimental jewelry.
