Elsa Peretti introduced Diamonds by the Yard at Tiffany & Co. in 1974 with a quietly radical idea: a diamond need not be saved for occasions. Set low on a fine chain instead of raised in prongs, the stone was meant to be worn every day.

A single round brilliant cut diamond sits in a smooth, polished 18K yellow gold bezel. Loops at either side join the bezel to the cable chain, so the stone rests flat at the base of the throat.

Both oval tags are present, stamped "Tiffany & Co." , "AU750." and "Peretti"

At 16 inches, this Diamonds by the Yard necklace sits at the collarbone and layers easily with longer chains, a Peretti design that remains one of the most recognizable in modern fine jewelry.
